Java as a puppy
When I was choosing Java I was looking for a happy and confident puppy and that is what I got. I was particularly happy about the visual startle test which is done by opening an umbrella near a puppy. She checked it out immediately and started dragging it around. Sure, as a little puppy she got scared a few times, but each time she recovered really quickly, which is actually the part that matters.
She was very interested in stalking and chasing birds so we had a lot of opportunities to redirect her prey drive and now she is very good at letting them be.
When she was 3 months old we joined a puppy class to give Java experience of focusing on me in presence of other puppies. Java loved food so it was very easy to keep her attention and she was just as happy to train in class setting as at home. She learned quite a few tricks, but most importantly she learned how to work in a distracting environment.
At 5 months:
At 8 months old we started working through Silvia Trkman’s Agility Foundations. Occasionally I post about our training, but since most trainings are experiments or little tweaks I’m afraid it would get quite repetitive if I kept posting about them.
She is my little black sunshine who loves all people and dogs.
With people she is very gentle and considerate. While I get many bruises from Ruby jumping on me, Java’s paws never leave a mark. She loves to cuddle next to me at home, preferably under the blanket. She is very easy on leash, even a gentle pressure will move her. A friend commented that on leash she feels like a 3kg dog 🙂
She loves running with other dogs, but show her a ball (her favorite reward) and that is all she will see. Then she gets very competitive: she needs to get to that ball first… or steal it from the other dog 🙂
I am really happy that she likes water and has learned how to swim. This makes it much easier to have active walks even in the middle of a heat wave – I just throw a ball in the water from time to time.
